TOPIC - ADVOCACY, POLICY, AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT: UNDERSTANDING THE RULES AND NAVIGATING THE CONVERSATION

Nonprofits, professional associations, educational institutions, and private businesses all play an important role in educating the public and engaging in policy discussions — but the rules around political activity, advocacy, lobbying, and public engagement are often nuanced and misunderstood.

This timely discussion will explore the legal and practical boundaries organizations and individuals should understand when participating in public policy conversations, particularly during a midterm election year. Attendees will gain insight into what nonprofits, member organizations, construction firms, engineering companies, and other businesses can and cannot do when it comes to supporting or opposing legislation, engaging with elected officials, educating the public, or participating in political discourse.

The panel will also explore how organizations involved in government-funded programs like EPA Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund and grant applications can ensure communications, outreach, and advocacy efforts remain compliant and appropriately structured. A speaker from NJIT with expertise in EPA grant assistance programs will discuss best practices for maintaining clear boundaries and transparency throughout the grant application and implementation process.

Featuring communications expert Sam Biederman and grant expert Nat Francesco, the conversation will cover both organizational best practices and the personal realities of navigating political and policy conversations in professional settings, written documents, on social media, and in everyday interactions.

2026 NJDEP Regulatory Update (Rescheduled) (18 Aug 2026)

The Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast (BCONE) and NJSWEP are pleased to announce that our incredibly popular keystone event the “NJDEP Regulatory Update” will be held in Trenton this August.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) implements regulations and policies, which frequently evolve as priorities change. This one-day workshop will keep attendees informed about the NJDEP’s priorities and plans, as well as the status of existing programs, updates, and proposed legislative changes that are key to NJDEP programs.

NJDEP Assistant Commissioners from all programs will be present, including Contaminated Site Remediation and Redevelopment (CSRR), Sustainable Waste Management, Watershed and Land Management, Air, Energy, and Materials Sustainability, Water Resources Management, and Community Investment and Economic Revitalization Projects and Funding Opportunities.

Continuing Education Credits:

We received approval from the The New Jersey Site Remediation Professional Licensing Board (“SRPL Board”) for 5.0 LSRP Regulatory Credits = NJSRPLB Course Number 2026-027.

New this year: Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Credits are pending for attorneys who attend the event! It is anticipated that at least 5.6 CLE credits will be granted. If you are interested in Regulatory Update CLE credits, please register using the form here: CLE Credit Registration

Food:

Breakfast and drinks are provided. Lunch is not provided at the event. While there is a cafeteria space at the NJDEP, it is recommended that you bring lunch.

Last Day to Register:

Registration and payment must be received by August 11, 2026. Walk-in registrations will NOT be accepted due to NJDEP security requirements.
